The Vision

St George’s Church is at the heart of the neighbourhood in Tufnell Park.

The church is a community of Christians, centred on worship and prayer, and from this flows all kinds of ways in which the local people and environment are served, blessed, uplifted, connected and made whole.

The church has its doors open to all people, from every background, all faiths and none. We seek to be a place of deep friendship, healing and hope.

You can read more about all our activities under Regular Activities and News and Events.

The Issues

The church building needs serious work and that costs serious money.

It’s not difficult to look up and see that the fascia (the panels around the roof) are very broken. The metal is so corroded that pieces have fallen off, which is why there is temporary netting around it. Both the fascia and roof are beyond their lifespan and are leaking. This needs urgent attention.

There is no insulation in the roof and overhang, which means that our carbon footprint is much higher than it should be.

The kitchen is very tired and no longer fit-for-purpose, especially for cooking large meals for the local community.

There are other needs too, particularly in relation to the annexe (where our Children’s Church room and office are located), which requires a total rebuild to improve and increase the community space, and this will be in a later phase of the project.

The Plan

For financial reasons, the project needs to be carried out in stages.

Phase 1, which includes urgent works, involves:

  • Replacing the roof coverings and fascia to stop the leaks

  • Installing insulation to the roof and overhang to improve our thermal performance

  • Installing solar panels to provide some of our electricity

  • Replacing the original skylights (currently broken and covered over), to let in natural light

  • Refurbishing the kitchen to improve functionality and safety for mass catering.

The cost of these works is £830,000.

Phase 2 will be further down the line and involve rebuilding the church’s annexe with a better configuration and more community rooms.
