Roof Project
The Vision
St George’s Church is at the heart of the neighbourhood in Tufnell Park.
The church is a community of Christians, centred on worship and prayer, and from this flows all kinds of ways in which the local people and environment are served, blessed, uplifted, connected and made whole.
The church has its doors open to all people, from every background, all faiths and none. We seek to be a place of deep friendship, healing and hope.
You can read more about all our activities under Regular Activities and News and Events.
The Roof Project
Good News! We have nearly reached our fundraising target and are expecting to start building work in July. St George’s roof has been in poor condition for quite some time and we have been fund-raising and planning the work for several years so it is very exciting to be at the stage where work can begin.
We are immensely grateful to those individuals who have donated to our appeal and to the bodies who have provided grants including Richard Cloudesley Charity, Benefact Trust and Garfield Weston Charity. We could not go ahead without you.
The project includes:
Full replacement of the main church upper and lower roof coverings
Replacement of fascias
Insulation to modern standards
Opening up of all the rooflights to let in more natural light
What happens during the building work?
We expect the building work to take from mid July 2025 to the end of November 2025. During this period the whole church site will be fenced off with just a passageway through the scaffolding to provide access to the main glass front door. No car parking or drop-off will be available on site.
Over the school summer holidays and one week in the autumn internal work will take place Mon - Fri and Saturday mornings on the rooflights, so most external hire groups will not be able to use the building. Church services will continue over the summer along with children’s party hire.
The rest of the time the work will be external so St George’s weekday activities and services and all hire groups will be able to use the building as normal. There will be very little natural light coming into the main space though.
Our aim is to fit solar PV to our large flat roof to reduce the carbon footprint of our operation and we are working on both the design of a system and getting together the money to make this happen.
Please pray…
Thanks God that the money has been raised and the project can begin.
Pray for the contractors, professionals and St George’s team working on the project, for safety, good decision making and steady progress.
Pray for St George’s to continue reaching out to the community and that our church services still feel welcoming to members and visitor alike.
